I first got interested in photography when I was still at school, then I remember one day coming home from work and saying to my wife ‘I need a hobby’ so my interest was resurrected.
I was in my late twenty’s, I went and purchased a new camera and lens and two reels of black and white film, after paying out nearly £15 to get them processed and only small prints I decided I must do it myself.
I purchased an enlarger and all the gear I needed and set about building a darkroom in my loft, it only too a few weeks and I was up and running, next I joined a camera club, I picked the biggest club in the area, joined and I remember how difficult it was to get accepted in the club. I decided to give it a few more weeks before looking for a smaller, perhaps more friendly group.
That evening a new guy came to the club and like me he was finding it difficult to get talking to anybody, I started chatting and we became good friends, including many weeks away on photographic jaunts to all parts of the country, after a few years I was running the club and my mate was competition secretary, this continued for several years until, sadly like many of the camera clubs the membership was too small to keep the club going.
Before the decision to close the club I started another group, we met in my office once a week for 50 weeks throughout the year, our largest evening attendance was 55 members, it was fully financed through my company, including tea and biscuits, no membership fees, only problem was we were outside the camera club system so we had to do everything ourselves.
I had a few friends that were willing to put on an evening based on their experiences, I also had a good friend who would help with any queries you had regarding camera, settings and even Photoshop, he was called Old Bill, his participation was most helpful to many members.
A few years ago, I moved to Devon, close to Dartmoor where I have spent many happy hours, I spent a lot of time walking my poodle, Arnie, and photographing mushrooms and general landscapes. It's a super place to be so close to.
Today I’m unable to walk very far so most of my recent photography has been photographing birds through my study window, my bird table is only 4-5 feet from my window and with my camera on a small tripod I’m able to work on my computer and take my photographs at the same time.
I hope you enjoy looking at my photos on the many subjects I have photographed over the years.
